Canberra, Australia’s capital city (that’s right, it’s not Sydney) is a planned city, selected in 1908 as the site for the nation’s capital, and a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne.
It often gets a bad rap for being boring and bland, but nothing could be further from the truth. Canberra is actually a fantastic family destination. Better still, Canberra is an affordable family destination. The city has an amazing array of family-friendly museums and galleries, many of which are free. Child-friendly activities abound, along with some truly wonderful outdoor parks and natural reserves.
Canberra is a very easy three-hour drive southwest from Sydney, and totally worth the effort.
The Canberra and Region Visitors Centre is located on the left hand side of Northbourne Ave, as you drive into town.
